A painter in Boise told me my taping finish was too smooth for texture
We were finishing a remodel and I spent extra time getting the seams glass flat, but he said the texture spray wouldn't stick right and might peel later. I always thought smoother was better, but now I'm second guessing my prep work. Do you guys ever leave a bit of tooth on the final coat for texture to grab?

Listen to your painter, he's giving you good advice. Texture needs something to hold onto, like a light sanding between coats. I've seen orange peel texture fail on glass smooth walls because it just slides right off. Leaving a bit of tooth on that final skim coat makes all the difference for a lasting job.

My uncle tried to skip sanding before texturing his garage ceiling. He said it felt smooth enough after mudding. Six months later, whole patches of that popcorn texture came down like snow every time the garage door shook. He spent a whole weekend redoing it, and this time he used 120 grit sandpaper like he should have. That extra rough surface makes the texture grip for good. Now he never rushes the prep work.

Man, that's everywhere. People skip the boring prep step because the surface looks fine. I've seen it with paint peeling off a glossy door that wasn't sanded, or tile cracking because the floor had a little dust left on it. The work that doesn't show is what makes everything else last. It's always the hidden step that comes back to bite you.
