Oh man, that's the worst. Thirty years is a good run, but it's never a good time for something major to just quit like that. It always seems to happen at the most inconvenient moment. I feel for you, that's a huge headache to deal with on a job. Hope the replacement goes smoother than the failure did.

My old furnace gave out last winter after 28 years, right in the middle of a cold snap. I mean, @jennifer_fisher is totally right about the timing always being the worst. What saved me was calling a local guy who had helped a neighbor, he found a used but good motor to get me by for a few weeks. It bought me some time to save up and not panic buy a whole new unit right then. That kind of stopgap fix can really take the pressure off when a big thing dies.
