Saw someone desoldering a capacitor backwards today in a shop

I was at a repair shop in Portland yesterday picking up parts and this guy was pulling a cap off a board but he had his iron on the wrong side. He was heating the plastic base instead of the solder joint, took him like 5 minutes and he burnt the board. Why would you not check the bottom of the board first before prying? Has anyone else seen this mistake happen with new guys?

My buddy Kyle did this on his first motherboard repair. He spent 20 minutes with a heat gun trying to melt the plastic housing off a capacitor that was near a CPU socket. The whole time the solder joint was 2 inches to the left on the back of the board. I walked over and just flipped his board over and tapped the joint with my iron and it fell right out. He still has that board on his wall as a learning trophy with the melted footprint.

Classic new guy move. That smell of burnt plastic never lies.
