I finally saw why that elderly couple painted their brick house white
Last summer I was walking through an old neighborhood in Portland and saw this couple repainting their 1920s brick house bright white. I thought it was a shame at first, covering up that historic brick. Then the husband told me their utility bills were half what they used to be because the white reflected heat better in summer. Has anyone else seen people covering brick for practical reasons like that?

Wait, did they paint the brick itself or just cover it with something? Seems like that would wreck the brick over time.

Can't believe they'd just paint straight onto old brick like that. That's going to trap moisture and cause it to crumble eventually.

Whoa wait, they just slapped paint straight onto the old bricks without sealing or anything? That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen with moisture!
