Painted my front door a trendy color without checking the finish first
Bought a gallon of that matte sage green everyone's using. Did not look at my door's current paint. It was a high gloss oil based. The new water based paint peeled in two days. Wasted $45 on the paint and a whole weekend. Anyone have a good way to strip old paint without sanding forever?

My old house had the same glossy oil paint on every door. I tried a citrus based stripper from the hardware store, the kind in the yellow can. It took three coats and a lot of scraping with a plastic putty knife, but it got down to the wood without a huge mess. Just make sure you let it sit long enough to really bubble up. After that, a light sanding was all it needed before the new paint stuck perfectly.

Trust that yellow can stuff, @rileyh10. The citrus strippers work slow but they don't wreck the wood like the harsh chemicals can. It's worth the extra time.
