Just finished a job where the old fence posts were set in gravel only

I keep seeing this on tear-outs, and it's always a lean or a collapse waiting to happen. On this one, a 40-foot section was swaying like a flag in a breeze because the concrete collar was missing. Anyone else run into this a lot in older neighborhoods?

No concrete at all? That's wild. I saw a whole row of those just tilt over after one good rainstorm. The posts were basically just sitting in a hole full of wet sand. How that even passes an inspection is beyond me.

Yeah, that "hole full of wet sand" is exactly why I always use concrete. It locks the post in place for good.

My uncle's deck in Toledo fell off the house because the posts were just shoved into gravel pits. The whole thing slid down the hill after a spring thaw. I can't believe people think that's a solid way to build anything. It's just asking for a total failure.
