Remember when we all just used old pickle jars for our ferments?

Back in 2015, my whole setup was a bunch of washed out jars with the lids just sitting on top, not even screwed down. I lost more than a few batches to mold that way. Then about three years ago I finally bought a set of those glass weights and proper airlock lids. The difference was huge, my sauerkraut stopped going bad. Now I wouldn't go back to the old way for anything. Anyone else still using the jar lid method, or did you all switch over too?

My grandma still uses old jars with the lids flipped. I mean, it works for her but I had the same mold problem. Feels like a lot of stuff has gotten like that, where the old way is fine until you try the new thing and realize how much easier it is.

Oh man, my friend's pickles went fuzzy after she tried that lid trick too.

My buddy tried the old jar lid trick with his kimchi last year and it turned into a science project. He switched to weights after that and hasn't looked back.

Weights are just way more reliable, no contest.
