Got roasted in a security audit for using the same Wi-Fi password for guests and staff

Last month we had a security consultant come in to review our small office setup. She looked at our network config and asked why guests could access the same file server as employees. I told her it was fine because we trust our clients. She said trust is not a security policy and pointed out that anyone sitting in our waiting room could potentially grab sensitive files. She made me set up a separate guest VLAN with no access to internal resources. Took me about two hours to reconfigure the router and test everything. I felt stupid I didn't think of it myself since the hardware supported it the whole time. Does anyone else run separate networks for visitors or just wing it like I was?

Old drafter at my first job said I was 'over-dimensioning' everything

Way back in 2016 at a shop in Tulsa, this guy named Jerry kept telling me I was adding way too many tolerances to my steel details. I thought he was just being lazy or old school, you know? But after three revisions on a simple beam connection (and the shop foreman getting mad), I realized he was 100% right. I was calling out +/- 1/16 on stuff that just needed +/- 1/8, which made fabrication take twice as long. Has anyone else had a senior drafter call them out on something that felt wrong but actually saved the whole job?

Met a guy at DEF CON who made me ditch LastPass

I was at DEF CON in Vegas last week and a random guy in line for coffee said he'd cracked my exact password scheme on a bet. He didn't even need my email, just my username from a breach dump. Made me switch to Bitwarden that same night and enable 2FA on everything I own. Has anyone else had a stranger change your whole security setup in 5 minutes?

That one Tuesday where every batch of sourdough came out perfect

Had a rough Monday last week in my shop in Tulsa, three loaves collapsed and I was ready to toss everything. Then Tuesday hit and every single loaf came out with that perfect crackle and crumb... I even had a regular named Betty say it was the best she's had in 5 years. Has anyone else had those random perfect days that make you forget the bad ones?

Rant: An old timer told me to stop using fire caulk on every seam and just use a bead of furnace cement instead

I tried it on a 1920s double-flue in St. Paul last week and it dried way harder with no cracks after a test burn - has anyone else had better luck with one over the other on old brick?

Shoutout to the guy at the Portland retro video store who made me give a show a second chance

I was browsing at Video Game Heaven on Hawthorne last month and this employee overheard me trashing Battlestar Galactica. He didn't push, just said the miniseries pilot is basically a whole different show and to watch it first. I gave it a shot that night and I was hooked by the end of the first episode. Now I'm on season 2 and I can't believe I almost skipped this whole thing. Anyone else have a show they wrote off too early because they started at the wrong place?

Spent two hours trying to match a color swatch before realizing my screen was in night mode.

I was tweaking a client logo in Figma and could not figure out why the hex code kept looking off until I turned off the blue light filter and it matched perfectly in under a minute, has anyone else had a display setting mess with their design work like that?

That one time a lead drafter told me my lineweights were all wrong on a commercial project

I was working on a set of MEP drawings for a mid-rise apartment job in Nashville a few months ago. A senior drafter I respected walked over and said 'your HVAC lines look like they're drawn with a Sharpie.' At first I was annoyed but then I looked closer and realized all my supply ducts and structural columns were basically the same thickness. I ended up creating a custom lineweight plot style with 6 distinct layers. Has anyone else found a solid preset that actually prints clean on those plan sets?

Stop nesting your groups 5 levels deep in Figma

I keep getting other people's files and the layers panel is a MESS. It takes me 15 extra minutes just to find one button because someone nested everything inside 6 frames. Why not just flatten it to 2 or 3 levels max? Has anyone else had to deal with this?

Hit 1000 lines of pure CSS and felt like I broke something

I was working on this landing page hero section with a particle background and a floating 3D card reveal. After tweaking the clip-path and keyframes for like two hours, I checked the file size and realized I'd written exactly 1000 lines of CSS. No preprocessor, no JS hackery, just pure style rules and animations. It surprised me because when I started doing CSS battles years ago, I thought 200 lines was a lot. Has anyone else hit a weird milestone like that where you just stop and count?
