Showerthought: Everyone says to max your 401k first, but I put $5k into a Roth IRA instead last year.

I was at my kitchen table in Austin when I saw my 401k fees were eating a chunk of my growth, so I shifted focus. Anyone else find that standard advice doesn't always fit?
