I used to think a big, open office was the only way to run a creative team

The moment I realized it was wrong was when a senior designer told me, 'Amy, I can't focus on this layout with all the chatter.' We switched to a quiet room policy from 9 AM to noon, and project completion rates jumped by 30% in a quarter. How do you handle focus time versus collaboration in your space?

Oh man, that reminds me of my friend's startup. They had this whole open floor plan and thought it was great, until their lead coder started wearing noise-canceling headphones all day. He finally snapped during a bug fix and said he needed a cave, not a fishbowl. They ended up putting up these little bookcase dividers and making two "library quiet" zones. Their code quality got way better almost right away. What kind of quiet spaces have you guys tried?

That story about the coder needing a cave is spot on. My old office tried making the whole floor quiet, but then people just whispered and it got weird. We ended up with a rule where if you put a red cup on your monitor, it meant "do not talk to me right now." It was silly, but it actually worked better than any official policy. People respected the cup more than a sign from management.

We tried the red cup thing once. I was the one who kept forgetting my cup and getting interrupted. My own fault, but still drove me nuts.
