Honestly, I watched the '86 OVA and the 2016 remake of Legend of the Galactic Heroes back to back.

Tbh, the older one just felt way better, mostly because the pacing in the new version rushed through the first 20 episodes. The original took its time building up Reinhard and Yang's rivalry, which made the big fleet battles hit harder. Has anyone else tried both and felt the same way about the character development?

The original OVA had more room to breathe, letting you see how Reinhard and Yang became who they are. Cutting that Earth cult stuff early on really hurt the new version's sense of scale. You lose the feeling that this huge history is moving behind the main characters.

Hard disagree. The new version's tighter focus on Reinhard and Yang's direct conflict is way more engaging. All that Earth cult lore early on just bogged the original down. It felt like homework. The remake gets you to the core political drama faster, and the scale comes from the fleet battles and strategy, not some hidden cult most viewers forgot about anyway.

The 2016 version cut out the whole subplot about the Earth cult's early influence, which really watered down the political world building for me.
