Friends always corner me at parties with their broken appliance stories

I keep getting pulled into fix-it chats whenever I'm out socially. It seems like everyone has a dryer or dishwasher issue they want free advice on. How do you handle these situations without sounding rude?

Ugh, that's the worst! I lean INTO it and start asking them super technical questions about circuit boards until THEY look uncomfortable.

Oh man, I know exactly what you mean. Last weekend at a BBQ, my cousin's neighbor spent twenty minutes detailing his washing machine's weird humming noise (I nodded along but had zero clue). It's like once word gets out you fixed a toaster once, you're the free repair hotline. I started just saying 'have you tried unplugging it for a minute?' which works way more than it should. Now I mostly just point at the snacks and make a run for it.

My uncle actually built a side business from those party chats, landed three clients last month. Maybe lean into it and hand out a card?
