Showerthought: my buddy's laugh at my logo made me rethink everything

I was showing my buddy the logo for my landscaping company I've been using for 2 years. He's a graphic designer for a real firm, so I figured he'd say it looked fine. Instead he just laughed and asked why my company name was wrapped around a shovel like it was trying to escape. He said the kerning (whatever that means) was all off and the font looked like a ransom note. That hit different because I spent $150 on a Fiverr gig and thought I got a steal. Now I'm staring at my truck wrap and business cards feeling like a clown. Has anyone else had someone point out something obvious about their logo after using it for forever?

That designer friend of yours did you a solid, even if it stung. I had a similar thing happen with a logo my cousin made for my side gig - he put a tree in it that looked like a blob of broccoli. Spent a year handing out business cards before someone at a barbecue straight up asked if I was a landscaper or a vegetable farmer. Sometimes you just get too used to looking at something to see it clearly.

Spent a year being a broccoli farmer's first logo casualty.
