Burned 4 batches of cookies before my neighbor told me my oven runs hot

I kept following the recipe exactly but everything came out dark on the bottom. My neighbor came over last Tuesday and pointed out my oven runs 50 degrees hotter than the dial says. Has anyone else had a hidden problem like that ruin their baking for a while?

Exact same thing happened to me with my old gas oven. Went out and bought a cheap oven thermometer, like ten bucks at the grocery store, and discovered it was consistently 50 degrees low instead of high. Started adjusting recipes by that offset and everything came out way more predictable. Another thing that helped was rotating my pans halfway through baking since the hot spots were crazy uneven too.

Gotta admit, I used to think oven thermometers were kind of a waste since I figured the built-in dial was close enough. But after reading this and hearing it from a couple other people, I'm starting to think I've been baking blind for years. Definitely gonna pick one up now and see what my oven's actually doing.

Read somewhere that most ovens are actually off by at least 25 degrees and it's almost always on the low side. @nathang67 that's a solid tip about rotating pans, I started doing that after burning one side of a batch of cookies and leaving the other side raw. The thermometer is a must have, I check mine every few months now because I've heard they can drift over time too.
