I was at a friend's garage sale in Omaha and saw a guy pay cash for a $200 lawnmower. He said he saves $50 a month just for stuff like that.

Yeah, people do that with all kinds of stuff to make spending feel smart.

But what's the actual cost he was paying before? Like, was it a lawn service or just gas for his old mower? The "saving" number is totally different depending on where it came from.

Check if he was even paying for a service at all. A lot of guys just have an old mower sitting around and their only real cost is time and a bit of gas. Calling that a "saving" is a total stretch. Feels like he's trying to make a random buy sound like a smart investment after the fact. The math only works if you start with a made-up number.

Honestly that math doesn't add up for me. Saving fifty bucks a month means he'd need four months just to break even on the mower. That's assuming he was paying that full fifty before, which seems high for just mowing. Maybe he meant he saves that much across all his garage sale finds, not just this one thing. Tbh it's easy to talk yourself into a purchase by fudging the numbers a little.
