Watched an old framer in Nashville square a wall with a 3-4-5 triangle, no laser

Back in 2018 on a job in Nashville, this old timer squared up a whole wall section using nothing but a tape measure and a chalk line. I had been relying on a laser level for everything, and that 3-4-5 method was faster and dead accurate. Has anyone else scrapped a tool after seeing an older technique work better?

Wait, did he actually show you the layout or just talk through it? Because Ive seen guys claim they know the 3-4-5 trick but then mess up the math on a long run. I scrapped my fancy digital protractor after watching an old man plot out a whole foundation with just strings and a square. That method is seriously underrated for big walls where lasers drift or the sun washes out the beam. Did you notice if he used any extra steps like checking the diagonal both ways? I bet thats the real secret, not just the triangle itself.

@evan51 nailed it. Doubling the diagonal checks is everything.

My old foreman used to make us pull all three sides of the 3-4-5 every time, even on a 30-foot wall. He said if you don't check the diagonal both ways, you're just guessing about your square. I still do it that way because a few extra minutes of measuring beats ripping out a whole wall that's off by half an inch.
