My uncle insisted I use lighter fluid on a sticky shutter, and I should have listened

He told me to put a drop of Ronsonol on the old Minolta's curtain pivot, but I was sure it would damage the silk. After three days of fighting with it, I tried his way and it freed up in seconds with no harm. Anyone have a better solvent for a 1960s cloth focal plane shutter?

Man, why do we always fight the simple fix?

Ronsonol is literally just naphtha, the same stuff in lighter fluid. The fact it works on old camera shutters is a total mind-blower to me. I would have been terrified of melting the adhesive or something. Your uncle knew his stuff.
