My uncle insisted I use lighter fluid on a sticky shutter, and I should have listened

Ronsonol is literally just naphtha, the same stuff in lighter fluid. The fact it works on old camera shutters is a total mind-blower to me. I would have been terrified of melting the adhesive or something. Your uncle knew his stuff.

Showerthought: I saw a 'book repair' station at the Seattle library that was just a glue stick and some packing tape.

My grandma's bible has held up for years with just some duct tape on the spine.

Back in the day, we always rammed our greensand molds with a hand rammer. Last week I tried using the new pneumatic rammer on a simple cope and drag for a gear blank, and the mold was way too hard. The casting came out with a massive swell. I guess the old way had a feel to it that the machine just doesn't get yet. Anyone run into this with the new gear?

Wait, you can CONTROL the air pressure on those things?

Appreciation post: My bathroom tile job went from a mess to perfect after I switched methods

Yeah, that "firm twist" when you set the tile is the real key. It presses out the air and locks it in. I learned the hard way too, skimping on mortar just leaves those hollow spots that crack later. A 1/2 inch notch trowel for those bigger tiles makes all the difference.

A bad week that changed my mind about those new digital diagnostic tools

See it as the tool doing its job, not making you look bad. It caught something you missed, which is the whole point. In my experience, that kind of stubborn reading forces you to check your own work more carefully. You end up learning from it instead of just feeling shown up. The dumb feeling fades, but the lesson sticks.
