What exactly do you mean by a support post, like a steel beam or something? I'm trying to picture how you hide something structural in an old house without it looking totally out of place.

Wait, you're seriously asking if a support post is a steel beam? @noah_black, a post is a column, like a pole holding stuff up. A beam goes across the top. Hiding a steel post is the easy part, you just box it in with old looking wood. The real trick is hiding a big new beam in the ceiling without it dropping down and looking weird.

Check out flitch beams. They use a steel plate sandwiched between wood, so it looks original. Lets you keep the old house feel while adding serious strength.
