I was doing a job in a small house in Tacoma last month, just a basic bedroom install. The homeowner was this older lady, maybe 80, who just sat in a chair and watched me work the whole time. I was about to start stretching in a corner when she said, real quiet, 'You know, my husband used to do that. He'd always say you can hear a good stretch when the tack strip sings.' I asked her what she meant. She said he'd listen for this specific, quiet 'ping' sound when the knee kicker hit just right, meaning the grip was solid. I tried it, really listening, and dang if she wasn't right. You can hear a tiny sound when it's locked in tight. I've been doing this for seven years and never once thought to use my ears like that. It's a small thing but it stuck with me. Has anyone else picked up a weird little tip from a client like that?
