Two sides to the thinning shears debate...
I used to use thinning shears on every dry cut to blend layers but now I skip them entirely and just point cut - which method gives you better texture control and when did you switch?

Wet hair plus thinning shears sounds like a panic attack waiting to happen.

Have you ever tried using thinning shears on damp hair rather than dry? I found the texture control is way better that way, and it keeps me from going too heavy handed.
