Overheard a dev say dark mode is just inverted colors... had to bite my tongue

Was sitting in a coffee shop in Austin last Tuesday and overheard two junior devs talking. One said dark mode is basically just flipping the color scheme and lowering the brightness. I almost choked on my drink. In my experience, that approach makes text look washed out and hurts readability on long pages. But I get where they're coming from since a lot of starter tutorials oversimplify it. What do you all think is the biggest misconception about designing dark themes that beginners get wrong?

The inverted colors thing drives me crazy, it's such a surface level way to think about it. Real dark mode needs way more thought than that, especially with contrast ratios and how different hues work against dark backgrounds. Pure white text on pure black is actually terrible for your eyes because of something called halation, where the text looks like it's bleeding. A lot of people don't realize that proper dark themes use off whites and dark grays instead of true black to keep things readable. Another big one beginners miss is how colorful elements like links or buttons need to be slightly desaturated so they don't feel like they're vibrating against the dark backdrop. It's more of a design science than people give it credit for.

Yeah exactly, the halation thing is real. I switched to a dark gray background with light gray text a while back and my eyes stopped hurting after like two hours of coding. It's wild how many apps still just do pure black with white text and call it a day.
