I used to think flux was just for messy jobs until I saw that "cold joints that fail after a month" problem myself. Now I keep a syringe of MG Chemicals 8341 no-clean liquid flux on the bench for everything. It's thin enough to wick under components nicely.

Yeah, I learned that lesson the hard way too. My early projects are basically a museum of cold solder joints held together by hope.
