Blew $600 on a new drive for a 10 year old elevator that just needed a jumper reset
Last month I was troubleshooting a slow leveling issue on a MCE drive in an old office building downtown. Spent two full days swapping boards, checking voltages, and even ordered a whole new drive unit for like $600 because I was convinced the controller was cooked. Turns out a maintenance guy had bumped a jumper on the I/O board during a fire alarm test. One jumper back in place and the elevator ran perfect. Kicker is I can't return the drive because I already opened the box. Anyone else ever chase a ghost like this and end up eating the cost?

Forgot to check the obvious stuff first, happens to everyone. That jumper probably had a label right next to it too if you'd looked close enough. Live and learn, next time start with the simple checks before dropping cash on parts.

Man, ain't that the truth. I've definitely been guilty of skipping the obvious checks and going straight for the complicated stuff more times than I'd like to admit. Feels like we're all wired to chase the hard fix first when half the time it's just a dumb little jumper or a loose wire staring us in the face.
