Honestly, I dropped $800 on a digital fabric printer for small runs before realizing the ink costs alone would kill any profit.
Tbh, I was so excited to print my own custom patterns at home that I didn't do the math on the specialty ink cartridges, which ran about $120 each and only lasted for maybe three yards of heavy cotton.

Oh man, my friend had that exact meltdown. She bought one to print tea towels with her art, figured she'd make a little side money. After her third ink order she just packed the whole thing back in the box and shoved it in her closet. She said it felt like feeding dollar bills into a shredder.
