Noticing more borosilicate use in local sculpting. | Glassblowers

Yeah it's all over the place now. That stuff used to be just for pipes and lab gear, but sculptors figured out it's tough as nails. Lets them make those crazy thin, twisty shapes that would crack regular glass. Saw a whole show last month full of abstract animal shapes made from it. The heat resistance is a big deal, lets them work faster without fear of thermal shock. It's basically the new hot tool for glass artists who want to push limits.

My local gallery had a whole wall of borosilicate insects last month, those tiny legs would have been impossible with regular glass. The artist said it cut her breakage rate in half, which is huge when you're working on that scale.

Is every glass artist suddenly a mad scientist with this borosilicate trend? I mean, it used to be for beakers and bongs, now it's fine art, and what's next, test tube chandeliers? But @iris478 is right about the heat resistance being a game changer. Artists can work faster and take more risks without their pieces breaking from quick heat changes. That means we get to see more wild, thin shapes that were just not possible before. It's honestly pushing the whole art form forward, and I'm here for it, even if it does feel like a science project sometimes.
