Been ramming sand by hand for 15 years, then a temp from the Toledo plant showed me his trick.

He just used a short piece of 2-inch pipe as a sleeve over the rammer handle for extra weight. I always thought more muscle was the only way to get a tight mold. Now I'm thinking maybe we rely too much on old habits instead of simple tools. What's a small trick you learned that made a big job easier?

I was using the wrong size drift pin for years and didn't know it

I was lining up some 3/4 inch plate holes for a boiler job last week, and my foreman asked why I was struggling. He saw me using a 1/2 inch drift pin on the 7/8 inch holes. I told him that's what I'd always done to get them close before the bolts. He just shook his head and handed me a 3/4 inch pin. The fit was perfect, no hammering needed, and it saved me about 15 minutes of fighting with it. I guess I just grabbed the wrong one from my kit when I was new and never questioned it. Anyone else have a simple tool habit they had to unlearn?

Update: My attempt at desk yoga triggered a contract dispute

Tried some simple stretches at my workstation to ease back pain from coding marathons. Pulled a muscle badly and had to delay a client project for a week. They cited a breach for missed milestones, so I had to dig into the injury terms. My legal consult cost more than the massage I probably needed instead.

Update: My attempt to start a local fan club blew up in my face

I put up flyers at the shop and got a few people interested, but then they all had different ideas about what to do. Now it's just awkward when I see them around, and the whole thing fell apart before it even started.
