My flat iron just gave out mid-service yesterday
I was doing a silk press for a regular client, about 20 minutes into the style, and it just stopped heating. The light went off and it went stone cold. I had to quickly grab my backup from the drawer, but it doesn't get as hot, so the finish wasn't as smooth. It was a Chi iron I've had for almost 3 years. Has anyone else had a main tool fail like that, and what's a reliable brand you'd switch to?

Yeah, like emery_brown said, everything feels like it breaks faster now. I saw a whole thread last week where stylists were swearing by those Babyliss irons too.

My 2010 Conair flat iron still works like new, but its 2022 replacement died in 18 months. Tessa922, you're right about that thread. It's not just hair tools. My last can opener gave up after six months. They make the plastic parts so thin now, and the metal feels cheap. You just know it's designed to fail so you buy another one.

Ugh, that's the worst feeling when a tool just quits on you in the middle of a job! It feels like everything is breaking sooner these days, from small appliances to bigger stuff. My old hair dryer lasted almost a decade, but the one I bought two years ago is already making weird noises. For a flat iron, I've heard good things about the Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium ones from other stylists, they seem to hold up. Definitely a good reminder to always have that backup ready to go.
