Read a blog post once that called this "designer's blind spot." You get so focused on the technical match, like weight or x-height, you forget the vibe each font carries on its own. Your slab serif might have the perfect thick lines, but if it screams "heavy machinery" to most people, it'll fight the script font. I've done the same thing pairing a clean geometric sans with what I thought was a playful serif, only to have a friend say it looked like a tech company trying too hard to be fun.
