Appreciation post: My old boss in Tampa swore by a 3/4 inch gap for hardwood expansion, and I thought he was nuts

For years I did a tight 1/2 inch gap like everyone else. Then last summer, a big job in that old humid Florida house I did with a 3/4 inch gap. Came back this week for a different repair and checked it. Zero buckling, zero gapping, perfect. That extra quarter inch over a 40 foot run saved the whole floor from the summer swell. I'm a total convert now. Who else runs a bigger gap than the book says?

Shoutout to the tax guy who finally fixed my 1099 mess after 8 months

I got a 1099-MISC last year for some freelance work, but the company sent it to my old address. I didn't get it until after I filed, so I had to do an amended return. I thought it would be simple, but between the IRS backlog and my own confusion, it dragged on. It took me calling three different accountants and about 8 months total to get it all sorted and get my correct refund. Has anyone else had a tax form issue that just wouldn't go away?

Thinking about how job interviews have changed since I started looking in 2019

Three years ago, I applied for a job at a local bookstore and the interview was just a chat with the owner in the back room. Last month, I helped a friend prep for a remote role, and we spent two hours on a practice video call with a prepared slide deck. Last week, I saw a posting for a similar store job that now requires a recorded video response before you even talk to a person. It feels like the whole process got a lot more complicated... Has anyone else noticed this shift in their field?

My 'soundproof' shed went from a quiet box to a full echo chamber overnight

I put up some cheap foam panels from a hardware store and the next day my voice started bouncing around like I was in a cave. Turns out I just trapped all the sound inside instead of blocking it. Anyone know a good way to fix this without starting over?

Spent a whole afternoon trying to get a color contrast ratio right for a button

I was working on a client's website and their brand green just wasn't passing the contrast check against a white background. I thought it would be a quick fix, maybe 20 minutes. I ended up tweaking the hex code, checking it in three different tools, and going back and forth with the client for approval. It took over four hours to finally land on a shade that looked good and met the AA standard. Has anyone else had a simple color pick turn into a huge time sink?
