My neighbor swore the local water tower was a cell signal blocker

Old Mr. Henderson told me last summer that the new water tower on Maple Street was actually a government signal jammer, not a water tank. I laughed it off until my phone started dropping calls every time I drove past it, even with full bars a block away. Has anyone else had weird signal dead zones pop up near new infrastructure in their town?

Found out over 60% of websites still use inline styles for critical layout - that blew my mind

I was digging through the HTTP Archive data last night while my kids were asleep, and I saw something wild. Over 60% of the sites they scanned still use inline styles for key stuff like nav bars and grids. That's from their 2024 CSS report, not some old stat. Makes me wonder how much of that is from plugins or drag-and-drop builders just vomiting inline code everywhere. Have any of you come across a site where the inline styles broke something funny because of specificity battles?

Unpopular opinion: mortar mix ratios are way too hyped up

I spent 6 hours on a garden wall in Austin last week chasing the perfect 1:3 lime mix, only to realize my sand had clay in it and the whole thing was pointless. Ended up just going with a standard Type S and it held fine... why do we overthink this stuff? Has anyone else just said forget it and used regular mix?

The one question a drywall foreman asked that changed my crew's whole day

I was on a job site in Austin last summer, running behind on a 10,000 square foot office build. The drywall foreman, an old guy named Ray, pulled me aside and just said 'you ever think about how you're measuring your progress?' I had no answer. He showed me how he tracks each room by the number of boards hung per hour instead of just looking at the final square footage. We ended up catching a 3 hour delay in the break room before lunch. Has anyone else had a trade give you a simple fix like that that totally changed your schedule tracking?

Fancy $80 boning knife set turned out to be total junk

I dropped 80 bucks on a set of those Japanese-style boning knives from some online ad last month. The first one chipped on the second deer I broke down, right through the spine joint like it was nothing. The steel felt hard but it was brittle, snapped a tip off trying to work around a hip bone. Don't get me wrong, I like a thin blade for silverskin, but these were way too delicate for any real work. Anyone else get burned by a flashy knife set that looked good on paper?

TIL that cheap mortar mix bags will cost you more in the long run

So last month I grabbed a pallet of off-brand mortar mix from a hardware store in Knoxville to save about $40 on a retaining wall job. Man what a mistake. The stuff would not hold its consistency at all, kept turning sandy and crumbly no matter how I adjusted the water. I ended up having to tear down two sections of wall after they started slumping overnight. Factor in the extra time and wasted material and I probably lost close to $300 and three full days of work. Had to go back to my usual brand to finish the job right. Has anyone else dealt with knockoff mortar that just won't perform?

Had a designer friend rip apart my living room layout last weekend

My buddy Sarah came over to my apartment in Austin and said my couch was basically blocking the whole flow of the room. She showed me how moving it 3 feet to the left and angling the chairs opened up way more space than I thought possible. Has anyone else had a friend point out something so obvious you felt like an idiot for not seeing it yourself?

Almost skipped a book club pick last month, glad I didn't

I was dead set against reading 'Piranesi' for our club. The summary sounded too weird and I figured I'd just skim the SparkNotes. But my friend Karen kept pushing it, so I gave it a shot at page 50 I was hooked. The way the house just slowly unfolds its secrets got me in a way I didn't expect. Three of us ended up debating the ending for two hours after the meeting wrapped. Has anyone else had a book they hated the idea of but ended up loving once they actually read it?

Found out my favorite author only wrote 3 pages a day

I was reading an interview with Stephen King's biography, and it said he aims for just 3 pages daily. That blew my mind because I always thought famous writers crank out chapters at a time. Here I am stressing about not finishing a book in a month, and this guy takes it slow and steady. Anyone else surprised by how little some big writers actually write each day?
