Vent: I was flipping through a 1950s shop manual and saw they used to temper springs in used motor oil

Found this old book at a garage sale in Boise, and it said they'd quench coil springs in drained crankcase oil to get a specific blue temper color. I tried it on a small leaf spring last week and it actually worked way better than my usual canola oil. Has anyone else used old automotive fluids for tempering, or is that just a weird old-timer trick?

Had a coax line snap clean in half on a cold call yesterday

It was at a house in Springfield, the old RG-59 line was brittle from sun damage. I was just giving it a gentle tug to check the slack and it popped right at the fitting. Had to run a whole new drop from the pole, which took about an hour and a half. Anyone have a good trick for spotting that kind of dry rot before you put your hands on it?

Serious question, has anyone else spent an entire afternoon trying to get a door skin to line up perfectly on a 2018 F-150?

I fought with the alignment for over 4 hours before realizing the inner door shell had a slight bend from a previous, poorly done repair that I missed during the initial teardown.

Three years ago on a job in Spokane, my crew and I spent two full days just digging. Last week, the new guy had all 40 holes for a vinyl fence done with the auger before lunch. Anyone still using the old clamshell diggers for small jobs, or is that just a memory now?

Everyone says you need a concrete slab for a studio, but my gravel base in Portland has been solid for 5 years.

I was at a local building supply place in Gresham and a contractor told me I was crazy for not pouring a slab, said it would shift and crack. I put down a 6-inch compacted gravel base with proper drainage instead. It saved me over $4,000 and I've had zero issues, even with our wet winters. Has anyone else skipped the slab and been fine long term?

Vent: I used to think stacking 100 frames was the only way to get a good shot

For years, I'd spend hours capturing Orion from my backyard in Phoenix, convinced more data meant a better image. Then last fall, I saw a single 30-second exposure from a guy in my club that had more detail than my stacked mess. I realized my tracking was off and I was just stacking blur. Has anyone else found that fixing one basic thing made a bigger difference than collecting tons of data?

I used to think the 'One Piece' anime was way too slow to get into

I tried watching it like two years ago and gave up after the Arlong Park arc because the pacing felt so dragged out, man. What changed my mind was last month when my friend in Seattle told me to just switch to 'One Pace', which is that fan edit that cuts out all the filler. I started it over from the beginning and got through the Alabasta saga in a week, it was a total game changer. The story actually moves now and you can see why people love the characters so much. I'm up to the Water 7 part and it's honestly some of the best stuff I've seen. Has anyone else tried watching a series a different way that made you like it way more?

Tried a 45 degree wall angle in a small room and it backfired

I was working on a tiny home office, about 8 by 10 feet, and wanted to make it feel bigger. I saw a design video where someone angled a wall at 45 degrees to create a cool nook. So I built one out from a corner using drywall and a 2x4 frame. The result was awful. It just ate up floor space and made the room feel even more cramped and weirdly shaped. I learned that trick only works in much larger spaces with specific layouts. Has anyone else tried a bold structural change in a small room that totally flopped?

I finally got a clear night to shoot the Orion Nebula and my tracking mount just started making this awful grinding noise halfway through.

After saving for eight months to buy the Sky-Watcher mount, I had to pack everything up at 2 AM and now I'm staring at a blurry, trailed mess of what should have been a three-hour exposure stack.

I just read that the average 401k balance for people my age is only $40,000. I thought it would be way higher.

My cousin saved 40k in three years by putting 500 a month into a high yield savings account. It adds up faster than you think if you automate it. The key is making the transfer right after payday so you don't miss the money.

Appreciation post: Heard a vet say something about hoof wall separation that clicked for me

That's a really good point about looking for the cause. Just one small thing, the vet probably said the wall was pulling away from the laminae, not the white line. The white line is the space between the wall and the sole, it's not really a structure that gets pulled from. The laminae are the Velcro-like stuff that holds the wall to the coffin bone. When that fails, you get separation. But yeah, totally agree, you gotta fix the reason that Velcro is letting go, not just slap a patch on the crack that shows up later.
